SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide (D-Arg-dimethylTyr-Lys-Phe-NH₂) investigated for its capacity to stabilize cardiolipin and enhance mitochondrial function. It is of particular interest in studies of oxidative stress, mitochondrial bioenergetics, and the regulation of cellular apoptosis. SS-31 selectively localizes to the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it has been shown in vitro to modulate reactive oxygen species (ROS), improve ATP synthesis, and preserve mitochondrial integrity
